The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) is a government program that helps people in the United States buy healthy food.

Each month, SNAP deposits money onto a special debit card called an EBT card. You can use this card to buy approved food items at participating stores.

In Texas, SNAP payments are sent out throughout the month, from the 1st to the 28th. When you get your payment depends on the last two digits of your case number, also called the EDG number.

What Can You NOT Buy With SNAP?

There are some restrictions on what you can buy with SNAP benefits. SNAP cannot be used to purchase:

  • Alcohol, cigarettes, or tobacco products
  • Vitamins, medicines, or supplements
  • Live animals (except fish, shellfish, or animals slaughtered before leaving the store)
  • Hot or prepared foods (like a rotisserie chicken from the hot deli counter)
  • Non-food items (such as cleaning supplies or pet food)

What CAN You Buy With SNAP?

SNAP benefits can be used to buy foods like:

  • Fruits and vegetables
  • Meat, poultry, and fish
  • Dairy products
  • Bread and cereals
  • Snacks and soft drinks
